The Writing Dance
Wednesday October 30, 4 - 7pm
In this workshop, Brendan Fernandes led 8 students in discussions around the language of "dance” and the desire to have a notation for movement. Participants took part in a writing excercise, shared their writing with each other and were later introduced to new physical movement vocabularies. Performer and artist Colleen Snell assisted and also led the workshop.
Colleen Snell has explored dance both nationally and internationally; she trained, toured and performed with the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre (CCDT) in Toronto and at Ladmmi in Montreal. In England Colleen completed a Masters in Contemporary Dance with distinction at the London Contemporary Dance School. Colleen has worked with many distinguished dance practitioners, including the Hofesh Shechter Dance Company, Michael Trent, Sue MacLennan and Andrew Harwood. Colleen is an artistic associate with TOES for Dance, a New York-Toronto dance exchange with Julliard alumni, and is a co-artistic director of a street performance company called Frog in Hand. Colleen has received choreographic commissions from Cawthra Park Repertoire Ensemble, Port Credit Buskerfest (2012, 2013), Mississauga Arts Council, TOES for Dance and Mississauga Waterfront Festival (MWF). In December 2013 Colleen will undertake a research residency combining martial arts and dance at Movingeast in London, England. Colleen is fascinated by the written word and hopes to pursue trans-disciplinary practice-as-research as well as performance.
Born in Kenya of Indian descent, Brendan Fernandes immigrated to Canada in 1989. He completed the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art and earned his MFA from the Western University and his BFA from York University. He has exhibited widely including exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Art and Design New York, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the National Gallery of Canada, MASS MoCA, the Andy Warhol Museum, and the Guangzhou Triennial. Fernandes has participated in numerous residency programs including the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Work Space and Swing Space. He was an Ontario representative for the Sobey Art Award. Fernandes is based between Toronto and New York.
The Artist-in-Residence program is generously supported by the Jackman Humanities Institute, the Canada Council for the Arts, UTM Student Housing and Residence Life. The artist talk is presented in partnership with UofT's Master of Visual Studies (MVS) 2013 Pro Seminar Series.
The Red, Green, Blue ≠ White exhibition is the culmination of Johnson Ngo’s Curatorial Residency supported by the Canada Council for the Arts Grants to Culturally Diverse Curators for Residencies for the Visual Arts.
